Every siding decision comes down to four material families. Engineered wood like LP SmartSide combines wood strands with resin and is treated with zinc borate during manufacturing to resist termites and fungal decay — it looks like real wood, installs like wood, and carries a 50-year limited warranty. Fiber cement, led by James Hardie, is a cement-and-cellulose composite that shrugs off moisture, fire, and insects, but it is heavy, brittle at the edges, and demanding to cut. Composite cladding such as Alside ASCEND uses a glass-reinforced polymer face over a graphite-infused polystyrene core — the graphite particles reflect heat energy, giving it a significantly higher R-value per inch than standard EPS-insulated vinyl. And vinyl remains the budget king: inexpensive, low-maintenance, and governed by ASTM D3679 for thickness and wind-load standards, but hollow and vulnerable to impact damage.
What the Numbers Say
Thermal performance is where the newer materials separate. Graphite-infused polystyrene outperforms standard EPS insulation inch for inch because the graphite reflects radiant heat, which matters for the insulated siding category. On durability, zinc borate treatment gives engineered wood its termite resistance, while fiber cement needs no chemical treatment at all because the material itself is inorganic. On weight, rice hull composite is denser than hollow vinyl but lighter than fiber cement, which simplifies installation and reduces the strain on wall framing.
How to Choose
Match the material to your climate and your risk profile. Coastal and high-humidity areas reward fiber cement and composite. Freeze-thaw climates are hard on vinyl and favor engineered wood or fiber cement. Termite regions make zinc-borate-treated engineered wood or inorganic fiber cement the safe picks. And if energy efficiency is the priority, insulated composite panels with graphite cores win outright. Your contractor should quote at least two materials side by side — with the R-value, warranty, and wind rating in writing.
